ARTIST IN RESIDENCE PROGRAM BY LEHRER ARCHITECTS
We are passionate about design and passionate about making. It’s a continuum, from sketchbook to life drawing to the RaD Room. It’s all under the aegis of architecture and practice. Making is a primal pleasure. If you provide the techniques, everybody gets giddy making something. It’s being stimulated by the stuff you create, the pleasure of making it, and the ability to share. Everybody can get fortified in different ways. Our Artist in Residence program is a testament to this CULTURE OF CREATIVITY.

MY LABEL
I have
been hard at work on my Spring 2011 collection of party dresses and it’s now
available at my online shop on Etsy.com, a website devoted to selling hand-made items directly
from designers.
I
started the line in 2009, sourcing fabrics and supplies mainly in Los Angeles. My
dresses are made to order and I soon will have them in boutiques. My favorite
materials to use are silk, cupro, rayon, cotton, and linen. I frequently use surplus
(or “upcycled”) fabrics that would otherwise end up in landfills.
MY INTERESTS
At
Lehrer Architects, I do everything from the patternmaking to production for my
line, but I am also collaborating with the design team. One of the benefits of
being here is having people with great taste who can critique my work and give
me suggestions. It’s satisfying when your work appeals and makes sense to
people who aren’t from your field.
I am
interested in the commonalities between what makes a built space and a dress
both beautiful and functional. In design, there should be a wow factor. Whether
it’s one large move or a series of details, it should produce a stunning
effect.
COLLABORATIONS AND CLASSES
In
December, I taught a 2-hour class to the architects about fabric fibers and the
inner construction of clothing. I wanted to show the designers the scope of
materials and under structure of everything from suits to dresses.
In
January I taught the team about my design and production process, from the
inspiration to the final fitting. At every stage, we named so many similarities
between our industries.
Currently,
Michael and I are collaborating on an evening gown. We started with Michael’s
sketch and soon will have a ravishing asymmetrical dress.
