Net-Zero Villa
Nestled in the wooded hills of Santa Monica Canyon, this net-zero energy home interweaves luminous, powerfully proportioned living spaces—including a stone sculpting studio—with the surrounding forest and vegetable garden. Organized along a plinth and spine, the design celebrates natural light, ventilation, and the sun’s movement to eliminate the need for mechanical cooling. Photovoltaic panels generate more than 100% of the home’s electricity needs, powering everything from the residence to electric vehicles and heavy studio equipment. Expansive sliding and pivoting glass walls, skylights, and a unified indoor-outdoor ground plane blur boundaries between house and garden, allowing nature to flow through the architecture. A translucent, fully openable wall in the studio creates an adaptable indoor-outdoor workspace bathed in diffuse northern light.
